By the WinterSolstice, the farmwork over late crops has come to an end, marking the conclusion of a year's toil of farmers. Afterwards there will be a period of relatively more leisure, during which farmers will cook more dishes to celebrate a bumper harvest. Therefore, the Winter Solstice is a grand local festival,hence coming the saying that "Winter Solstice is more important than the New Year". The wives of all families will go back to their parental homes with gifts such as fish, duck and fruits. After the WinterSolstice, the villagers will offer sacrifices to the Emperor Guan (or Kwan Tai) in the watchtower and, on this day, decidedanew night watchman of the village for the next year, andthe gun and tools used by the watchman will also be handed over to the successor.
